The Common European Adder (Vipera berus) is a venomous snake found across most of Europe and northern Asia. This species usually sport a pale background colour with a darker Zigzag pattern, but some individuals are what we call Melanistic. This means they have an overload of black colour pigment. This can help them heat up faster than normal coloured ones, as they are ectothermic, but they stick out of the habitat way more than others, meaning it is a trade off situation. This lovely individual is almost a full melanistic individual with the exception of the rusty chin
